Countermapping is a practice that uses maps and mapmaking to challenge traditional, often dominant, historical and social narratives. It asks: Whose story is told? Whose land, perspectives, and experiences are centered or erased? By creating alternative “maps,” which can be visual, conceptual, or physical, we can highlight marginalized voices, reveal hidden histories, and question the systems of power embedded in conventional representations.
