Big changes. Bold art.

Since March 4, 2025, select galleries and other public spaces on the second floor of the museum temporarily closed to guests to accommodate long-planned gallery improvements.

Rolling closures began with the current African American galleries and expanded over the following three months. All galleries will reopen over the course of the next two years.

This transformative project will reimagine the presentation of the DIA’s African American, Modern, and Contemporary galleries, with a goal to enhance the experience for visitors. The museum always provides regular updates on works of art that are on view in the museum on the website collection pages.

During this period, the DIA will also provide the latest details on gallery closures here.

Reopenings and Temporary Installations

  • The newly reinstalled African American galleries are now open. The new galleries are located directly next to Rivera Court, in the center of the museum’s second floor.

Reimagine African American Art

Wadsworth Jarrell, Revolutionary, 1972. Detroit Institute of Arts, Gift of the Azzi/Lusenhop Black Arts Movement Collection

The Detroit Institute of Arts began collecting African American art in 1943.

Now, for the first time since 2007, the museum is reinstalling its African American galleries to showcase new works in the DIA’s collection in concert with existing favorites.

Tracing the evolution of African American culture, the collection provides a powerful lens into the lives, achievements, and resilience of Black artists.
