How to park at the DIA

Museum Parking Lot

A lighted, secured parking lot is located behind the DIA on John R St., south of Kirby St. and north of Warren Ave.

Street Parking

Metered street parking operated by the City of Detroit is available around the DIA and limited to a maximum stay of two hours. To avoid leaving earlier than desired, we recommend downloading the Park Detroit app to extend your stay remotely.

Wayne State University Parking

One parking structure operated by Wayne State University is located within walking distance of the DIA. The Welcome Center parking structure is located on Putnam St., just west of Woodward Ave.

Park and Take the QLINE

Parking is available at the Wayne State University lot on Woodward with an entrance on Harper. Take the QLINE down from Amsterdam street to Warren Ave.

Bike Parking

Bike racks are conveniently located in multiple locations outside of the DIA at the Farnsworth St. Main entrance, the Kirby St. Business entrance, and the John R St. entrance.

From Oakland County

I-75

Drive southbound on I-75, take exit 53A (Warren Ave.) and turn right on Warren Ave. Turn right onto Brush St. Turn left onto Frederick Douglas. Turn left on John R St. Follow John R St. to the museum parking lot.

Woodward Ave.

Drive southbound on Woodward Ave. Turn left onto Kirby St. Turn right on John R St. Follow John R St. to the museum parking lot.

From Macomb County

I-696

Drive westbound on I-696, take exit 18 to merge onto I-75 S toward Detroit. Take exit 53A (Warren Ave.) and turn right on Warren Ave. Turn right onto Brush St. Turn left onto Frederick Douglas. Turn left on John R St. Follow John R St. to the museum parking lot.

I-94

Drive westbound on I-94, take exit 215C (Woodward Ave/Brush St). Turn left on John R St. Follow John R to the museum parking lot.

From Wayne County

I-94

Drive eastbound on I-94, take exit 215C (Woodward Ave/Brush St). Turn right onto John R St. Follow John R St. to the museum parking lot.

I-96

Drive eastbound on I-96, take exit 190A (I-94 toward Port Huron). Merge onto I-94 E. Take exit 215C (John R. St/toward Woodward Ave). Turn right onto John R St. Follow John R St. to the museum parking lot.

Michigan Ave.

Drive eastbound on Michigan Ave, turn left on Trumbull Ave. Turn right to get on M-10 N (The Lodge). Follow M-10 N. Take exit 3. Turn right onto W. Forest Ave. Turn left onto Woodward Ave. Turn right on Kirby St. Turn right onto John R St. Follow John R St. to the museum parking lot.

From the Detroit Metro Airport

The Detroit Institute of Arts is a 25-minute drive east from Detroit Metro Airport

I-94

Drive eastbound on I-94, take exit 215C (Woodward Ave/Brush St.). Turn right onto John R St. Follow John R St. to the museum parking lot.

053 Bus

The 4-Woodward (or the 004) bus stops in front of the DIA, runs on Woodward Avenue from the Rosa Parks Transit Center at Woodward and Larned and the State Fair Transfer Hub, south of Eight Mile Road. Transfers to the 4-Woodward are available at Woodward and Larned downtown and the State Fair Transfer Hub.

Take the Q-Line along the Woodward Corridor which runs from Grand Boulevard station to the Congress Street Station. Stop at the Ferry Street station to get to the DIA. The DIA advises bicyclists visiting the museum to ride with caution if riding on Woodward Ave. because of the M-1 Rail and heavy car traffic. Additional precautions should be taken as bike tires are easily caught between the rail track and pavement.

MoGo

Bikers can use the MoGo to ride to the DIA. With various stations around the Detroit area, bikers can drop off their MoGo bikes at the 5/14 station on Cass Ave. In front of the Detroit Historical Museum or the 5/10 station on John R St. by the Michigan Science Center. Fares start at $1 to unlock and .25 cents per minute. Learn more on their site: https://mogodetroit.org/

Dequindre Cut

The Dequindre Cut runs from the Detroit Riverfront to the Eastern Market neighborhood. Riding north from the Detroit Riverfront on the Dequindre Cut, exit at Eastern Market and ride west on Wilkins St. Turn right on Brush St. and take an immediate left onto Watson St. Turn right onto John R St. Follow John R St. north to the museum.

Alternate Routes

West

If you’re traveling from the west side of Detroit, we recommend riding on Cass Ave. or Second Ave. instead of Woodward Ave. as they provide more frequent traffic stops and have less frequent car traffic.
Traveling south, turn left onto Kirby St. and cross Woodward Ave. Traveling north, turn right onto Kirby St. and cross Woodward Ave.

East

If you’re traveling from the east side of Detroit we recommend riding on John R. St. which has more frequent traffic stops and has less frequent car traffic than Woodward Ave..Traveling south, ride on John R St. and turn right on Farnsworth St. Traveling north, ride on John R St. At the Warren Ave. traffic light, move onto the sidewalk and continue north. Turn left at Farnsworth St.
