Explore our new Reimagining African American Art galleries and create a pencil drawing to take home while taking a closer look at the collection. No experience is necessary, and all supplies are provided. For ages 6 to adult (children 12 and younger should be accompanied by an adult). Capacity is limited.

Whether you’re a seasoned artist or just curious, this self-guided experience encourages observation, creativity, and quiet reflection among the museum’s masterworks. The Detroit Institute of Arts began collecting African American art in 1943. In 2000, the DIA established the Center for African American Art and in 2001 appointed the first curator dedicated to African American art in an encyclopedic American museum, signaling the museum’s ongoing support and celebration of African American art and history.
