Just 23 years old when she created it, Lotte Reiniger’s The Adventures of Prince Achmed premiered in Germany in 1926, whereupon it was immediately hailed as the world’s first feature-length animated film. Today, this enchanting Arabian Nights tale remains one of the great classics of animation—beautiful, mesmerizing, and packed with imaginative and wondrous adventures, including a magical flying horse, a sorcerer’s army of monsters, and, of course, a beautiful princess.

This cinematic treasure for all ages has been restored to reproduce its delicate images and spectacular color tinting and will be presented with live musical accompaniment by pianist David Drazin. (65 minutes)

Create a pencil drawing to take home while taking a closer look at the collection. No experience is necessary. All supplies provided. For ages 6 - Adult (children ages 12 and younger should be accompanied by an adult). Capacity is limited.

Scrolls were used for centuries to keep records and as decoration. Make your own scroll out of simple materials to take home.

Exploring the presence of music in visual art heightens awareness of the role music plays across cultures and time and provides a lens through which to explore the personal, social, and creative aspects of identity.

Now in its 13th year, the Inside|Out program brings high-quality reproductions of the DIA’s collection to outdoor venues throughout metro Detroit to increase engagement between the museum and its diverse audience.

From now through late November residents of Macomb, Wayne, and Oakland counties will be able to enjoy a piece of the DIA outside in their own community. Each community will display a number of reproductions outdoors clustered within walking or biking distance.
