In recent years, Iraq and Syria's cultural heritage has faced serious challenges due to conflict and instability. However, alongside these threats, dedicated efforts have emerged to protect, stabilize, and restore sites of significant historical and cultural value. This lecture highlights the work of the University of Pennsylvania's Iraq and Syria Heritage Stabilization Program.
Central to these efforts is the leadership and expertise of Iraqi and Syrian archaeologists, conservators, and community members, whose knowledge and dedication guide preservation on the ground. Focusing on collaboration, resilience, and shared responsibility, the talk examines how heritage protection can act as a unifying force among diverse cultural, ethnic, and religious communities.
Through case studies and field perspectives, the presentation shows how locally driven initiatives not only preserve the past but also support cultural continuity and future recovery. It encourages audiences to recognize the universal value of cultural heritage and the importance of empowering those working to protect it within their communities.
This lecture is cosponsored by the DIA Friends of Asian Arts and Cultures and the Southeast Michigan World Affairs Council.
