These two short films demonstrate the remarkable growth of Chaplin as a cinematic artist. Both have their origins in Chaplin’s vaudeville days with Fred Karno.
A Night at the Show (1915), produced for the Essanay Company, was adapted from the sketch Mumming Birds and features Chaplin in a dual role as Mr. Pest and Mr. Rowdy.
The Rink (1916) showcases Chaplin’s impressive roller-skating skills and is one of his best and most popular Mutual comedies. Both films are accompanied by the incomparable piano stylings of Dave Drazin.
