About the Artwork
Although Degas is mainly known as a painter, he also produced a number of sculptures. Their characteristic rough, almost "unfinished" surface gives them a sense of tactile immediacy and liveliness. As in his paintings, Degas was interested in showing ordinary figures from contemporary life. The “schoolgirl” was probably someone Degas had noticed in the street.
