It Takes a Village
About the mural
It Takes a Village celebrates Lathrup Village’s natural beauty, strong sense of community, and distinctive architecture through a vivid, storybook-inspired scene. At the center, a radiant tree with multicolored leaves rises above three homes set in lush gardens, its roots weaving through the landscape to symbolize how strength and resilience grow from diversity and deep connections to place. The homes reflect the city’s architectural character, while birds, butterflies, rabbits, and a watchful deer along a winding path highlight the interconnectedness of daily life in the village. Flowing lines and musical notes add a sense of movement and harmony, and a bold, joyful color palette captures the warmth and pride of those who call Lathrup Village home.
From the Artist
“I'm incredibly honored to be a part of the Lathrup Village project in collaboration with the Detroit Institute of Arts. This mural is not just a celebration of art — it’s a celebration of community, culture, and the unique architectural charm that defines Lathrup Village. My goal was to create a piece that feels rooted in place, evoking both pride and connection for residents and visitors alike. I’m grateful for the opportunity to contribute to this vibrant city’s visual story.”
As part of the Partners in Public Art program, the DIA collaborated with Lathrup Village to plan a vibrant community-driven mural. It is located on the exterior of Lathrup Village City Hall.
From the Community
“Lathrup Village chose to join the DIA Partners in Public Art program to collaboratively create a vibrant mural that reflects our unique character. By partnering with the DIA, we’re fostering local pride, amplifying our community, and making public art a meaningful, visible expression of our identity. Seeing the input from our community turned into a vibrant piece of public art that reflects our city, which will be enjoyed for years, has been tremendously rewarding.”
