About the mural

Artist Bakpak Durden created a mural that reflects the community’s top mural survey themes—nature and community. The artist describes the goldfinch as “a migratory bird that decides to stay put when the conditions are good.” Originally an agricultural hub between the city and the suburbs, Southfield later became a destination for African American residents relocating from Detroit.
