Phillip Simpson
Phillip Simpson, Detroit based fine artist and muralist, is dedicated to spreading joy worldwide through his vibrant art. From illuminating city streets to uplifting community centers, Phillip's colorful smile paintings are a beacon of positivity. Raised in Detroit's East Side, Phillip's journey began with a childhood passion for drawing. Despite the challenges of his surroundings, he found solace in art, choosing creativity over negative influences. His commitment to positivity led him to transform graffiti-covered spaces into uplifting murals, spreading messages of hope and unity. Inspired by his experiences at the University of Michigan School of Art & Design, Phillip developed his signature style, blending realism with symbolism.
His artwork, characterized by a distinctive smile motif, symbolizes the eternal struggle between light and darkness, echoing the philosophy of yin and yang. Guided by the wisdom of mentors like Antonio "Shades" Agee, Phillip embraced large-scale mural painting, making his mark on the city's landscape. Through initiatives like The Baltimore Gallery and collaborations with brands like Neiman Marcus and Owens Corning, he continues to amplify Black art and culture while advocating for positive change. For Phillip, art is more than just expression, it's a catalyst for transformation. With each stroke, he strives to uplift spirits, inspire kindness, and empower communities worldwide.
