About the Artwork
In 1937, Raoul Dufy was commissioned to create a monumental mural painting, The Spirit of Electricity, for the Paris International Exposition of Art and Technology in Modern Life. This is one of five enormous watercolor and gouache paintings on paper — all in the Detroit Institute of Arts’ collection — that Dufy made in preparation for the final work.
