About the Artwork
The prominent Arts and Crafts architect and designer C.F.A. Voysey created this salt cellar - and its accompanying spoon - in 1907 for his home, The Orchard, in Chorley Wood, England. These tablewares remained in his possession throughout his life and with his family until their purchase by the DIA.
Voysey was known especially for his modern country houses and his designs for domestic furnishings, including textiles, ceramics, and metalwork. As superbly exemplified by the salt cellar, Voysey's three-dimensional objects are characterized by their simple profiles and understated ornament employed to enhance the natural beauty of the materials he used.
