About the Artwork
Photography played a central role in the surrealist movement. Some of its quintessential images were first published in various magazines such as “La Revolution surrealiste” (1924–29), in which this photograph appeared. The photographs that Magritte created between 1928 and 1956 were, for the most part, small but magical documents of his family and friends in poses invented by him. He also devised haunting photomontages such as this image, in which the Palais Garnier (former home of the Paris opera) rises, like a gigantic mirage, from a meadow of serenely grazing cows oblivious to the phantom.
