About the Artwork

Generally painted in watercolor on ivory, portrait miniatures like this one were intimate keepsakes, often commissioned when a couple got engaged or married, or when someone was preparing to depart on a long trip. The ring on the top of the locket holding this one suggests that it was sometimes worn as jewelry, hung from a chain or pinned to a blouse or jacket.

An accomplished professional painter of miniatures, Anna Claypoole Peale was one of the first two women to become a full member of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the oldest and most prestigious arts organization in her home city of Philadelphia. She painted this image of John McKim, Jr. — a prominent Baltimore merchant, manufacturer, and railroad developer — as a companion to an earlier portrait of his wife, Margaret Telfair McKim, also in the Detroit Institute of Arts’ collection.
