The Teen Arts Council invites teens ages 13-19 to an afternoon of artmaking, mingling, and fun! Join us for a live model drawing session in the Great Hall, complete with an anatomy lesson. All supplies will be provided, and a free lunch is included with registration. Space is limited, so please register for only one of the following sessions:

  • Saturday, October 5, 2024 | 12-3pm
  • Saturday, October 12, 2024 | 12-3pm

This event is for teens, ages 13-19. Please bring a Student ID or other type of photo ID that shows your age.

In addition to the meditation session, participants can enjoy a complimentary smoothie bar and a creative art-making session. All educators are welcome to attend. Please dress comfortably and bring a yoga mat or thick blanket for added relaxation.

Please join us for the Native American Heritage Month Educator Workshop, featuring special guest Kelly Church. Church is a Pottawatomi/Ottawa/Ojibwe artist and educator whose work is part of the DIA’s permanent collection.

During the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to meet Church and learn about her artistic practice. The session will include a hands-on black ash basket-making activity led by Church, and you will get to keep the basket you create. Additionally, other objects from the DIA’s Native American and American collections will be discussed.

All educators are welcome. SCECHs are pending.

Detroit-based textile artist Najma Ma’at Wilson will demonstrate how to create stitched collages. Participants will use basic stitching techniques with needles, thread, and fabrics, with all materials provided. Guests will also have the opportunity to contribute to a collaborative stitched collage installation, which will be displayed in the Learning Center hallway later this winter.

Ma’at’s passion for fiber arts was inspired by her mother. She holds a degree in fiber design from the Center for Creative Studies and a master’s degree in education from Boston College. With 20 years of teaching experience, she has taught locally at Cass Technical High School and internationally in Cotonou, Benin, West Africa.
