Schroeder Cherry's puppet play tells the historic events of the Birmingham Children’s Crusade through the lens of a child. A meticulously hand-crafted rod puppet acts as our narrator, telling of a recent discovery he made of his grandfather’s past.

With 3D puppets and wooden cut-outs, Cherry skillfully animates the struggles, courage, and determination of young protesters who participated in marches and demonstrations during the 1960s. Through this captivating and interactive storytelling medium, Cherry honors the resilience of these young activists. (45 min.)

For families with children 8 and up. Presented with live ASL interpretation.

Join award-winning singer-songwriter/composer/educator Audra Kubat, when guests will become contributors to the creation of art guided by art. This workshop invites guests to collaborate in writing a song inspired by select artworks within the DIA with a focus on art created by women. The guided songwriting process will result in a finished song, and will be performed as a group led by Kubat.

The guided songwriting process begins by taking inspiration from a selected work of art in the DIA’s collection. Kubat will guide the group through a creative discussion developing observations into lyrics, which are then ultimately paired with a melody she contributes to become a cohesive, reflective lyrical piece of music. Workshop participants will gain some understanding of how to turn visual inspiration into song and develop a lasting relationship with the works of art used in the sessions.

Workshops begin at noon & 1 p.m. and meet in Rivera Court. Participation is limited; please register.
