Ease on Down the Road as you prepare for Thanksgiving with a chance to see The Wiz on the big screen!

Adapted from the 1974 Broadway musical of the same name, The Wiz reimagines the classic 1900 children's novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum with an all-Black cast. Dorothy (Diana Ross), a Harlem schoolteacher finds herself magically transported to the urban fantasy Land of Oz. On her travels seeking help from the mysterious Wiz, Dorothy befriends a Scarecrow (Michael Jackson), the Tin Man (Nipsey Russell) and the Cowardly Lion (Ted Ross).

This Universal Pictures and Motown Productions film has become a cult favorite and a Thanksgiving tradition. With strong performances from Diana Ross and Michael Jackson, and brilliant sets by Tony Walton, there is no denying that The Wiz has earned its place as a holiday classic, bringing joy and nostalgia to families year after year.

Get ready for a toe-tapping, family-friendly night with Helen Roy and David Fuhst! Helen brings a fresh twist to classic American hits by translating songs by artists like Elvis Presley, Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, and Paul Simon into Anishinaabemowin, the Indigenous language of the Great Lakes.

Helen’s unique translations will have you enjoying these iconic tunes in a whole new way. With over 20 years of experience teaching Anishinaabemowin, she makes language learning fun and accessible for all ages. Accompanied by David Fuhst on guitar and lyrics displayed on screen, this event is the perfect opportunity for the whole family to enjoy catchy music, learn about Anishinaabe culture, and experience the magic of language through songs we all know and love.

On the final day of the thirteenth annual community exhibition Ofrendas: Celebrating el Día de Muertos, join a special discussion with the artists who created the altars on view. The program will begin with representatives from the Mexican Consulate offering insight into the rich history of Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) and the tradition of Ofrenda altars. Each participating artist will then share the meaning and inspiration behind their altar and answer audience questions.

This program is for all ages, though some topics may be sensitive for children under 10.

Free with museum admission. Capacity is limited and seating begins 30 minutes before the program start.
