Kenneth Thompkins is the Principal Trombonist of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.

This Structurally Sound concert is a co-production between the DIA and Detroit Chamber Winds and Strings and features Ken Thompkins in combination with music, art and poetry.

The concert will feature new compositions by Jeff Scott and Maurice Draughn and poetry by Kalimah Johnson. This will be an immersive experience not to be missed.

Participants will experience the Africana field trip, learn about recent acquisitions of African American art, and preview the forthcoming retrospective exhibition from British-Ghanian photographer James Barnor. Teens, ages 13- 19, are invited to join the Teen Arts Council at the Detroit Institute of Arts for an afternoon of watercolor artmaking, socializing, and snacking! Participants will have the opportunity to drop in to make a variety of watercolor cards and paintings.

Join Ypsilanti-based artist Jessy Butts for an opportunity to create a shrinky dink key chain or ornament of your own design! Drop-in to the Art Making Studio, draw a portrait and watch your artwork shrink to a third of its size and become 9 times thicker with this fun nostalgic material.
