About the European Paintings Council

The European Paintings Council (EPC) aims to cultivate greater interest in the Detroit Institute of Arts, specifically through the museum’s renowned collection of European paintings. The EPC supports diverse annual programming that highlights this collection, including focused gallery tours, guided behind-the-scenes visits to the museum, and lectures and seminars delivered by DIA curators and guest scholars. In addition, the EPC sponsors a high-profile endowed lecture every other year featuring a distinguished specialist of international repute.

Domestic and international travel organized by the EPC serves to foster enhanced knowledge of great public and private collections in the United States and abroad and to cultivate private collectors.

Membership Benefits

EPC members receive invitations to lectures and in-depth curator-led tours of the DIA’s permanent collection and may also participate in this auxiliary’s annual meeting, which includes an important enrichment portion. Members may also receive additional invitations to informal enrichment opportunities such as visits to private collections, behind-the-scenes tours, and other exclusive events.

Join/Renew Membership

The funds raised through member dues in the EPC are augmented by donations made on the occasion of formal and informal gatherings. All funds are used to support and promote the DIA’s famous collection of European paintings.

The EPC is led by a Board of Directors and is advised by the DIA’s Head of European Art and Allen and Elizabeth Shelden Curator of European Painting.

In order to be eligible for membership in the EPC, you must be a member of the Detroit Institute of Arts.
