TATM Film: The Last Laugh

Thursday, August 25
1 PM

One of the crowning achievements of the German expressionist film movement, Friedrich W. Murnau’s legendary silent classic The Last Laugh (Der letzte Mann) stars Emil Jannings as an aging doorman whose happiness crumbles when he is relieved of the duties and uniform which had for years been the foundation of his happiness and pride.

Through Jannings’ colossal performance as well as innovative, stunning camerawork, The Last Laugh becomes more than the plight of one individual, but a mournful dramatization of frustration and anguish of the working class between World Wars. Featuring a newly recorded musical score, this is the definitive edition of the landmark 1924 classic, presented in a 2K restoration by the Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau Foundation. (90 minutes)
