About the Artwork
The handsome young figure represents Apollo, the Greek god of light, music, archery, healing, atonement, prophecy, and flocks and herds. He was a popular deity with both the Greeks and the Romans, and many statues of him stood in his temples and public spaces. In this later Roman copy Apollo wears a belt over one shoulder to which a quiver for arrows would have been attached at his back.
