About the Artwork

Jacques Lipchitz first introduced reclining figures in his work in 1921. Adding a guitar, he explored spatial relationships between the figure and the object in drawings, studies on canvas, and small bronze maquettes (models).

In this preparatory study for a sculpture, the curves of the guitar rhyme with the woman’s body and contrast with the rigid straight lines of the guitar’s neck. Lipchitz explained these experiments in the following way: “What I was searching for essentially was the total integration of the objects, the guitar or other musical instruments, with the figure so that the result would be a figure-guitar rather than simply a figure holding a guitar.”
