About the Artwork
During the 1970s, many American photographers established color photography as a serious medium for aesthetic growth and experimentation. Joel Meyerowitz abandoned the earlier black-and-white film, urban subjects, and spontaneous photographic method when he became interested in color photography during 1973. Meyerowitz felt color photography more accurately expressed his memory or experience of a subject. He acquired an 8 x 10 Deardoff view camera and completed the “Cape Light” series during the summers of 1976 and 1977 while living on Cape Cod in New England. He created several versions of “Porch, Provincetown,” depicting a view of the ocean during mid-afternoon, dusk, and twilight. Each photograph has a different sensibility of light, color, and sensation and expresses the emotive character of his work and his sensitivity for the unique qualities that color photography offers.
