About the Artwork

Christ at the Sea of Galilee is an important early work by Ricci. Simon Peter, in his haste to join Jesus, has jumped from the boat and eagerly tries to reach Christ on the beach (John 21:1–8). The painting was probably designed for a church or a private chapel.
Ricci's ability to work in any style required by his patrons reflects the many influences that the artist encountered throughout his career. Born in Venice, he responded to the work of Veronese, but the influence of both Bolognese and Roman artists can also be seen in his style.
