About the Artwork
Jaune Quick-to-See Smith created I See Red: Herd in 1992 as a counterpoint to the celebrations commemorating the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ arrival in North America. The three-panel work is dominated by a moving herd of buffalo, one of the most iconic animals for Native Americans. The dripping paint that covers the buffalos resembles blood, evoking the devastation that their decimation wreaked on Native people. A deeper look uncovers collaged photos of Native people; animal locomotion studies by nineteenth-century photographer Eadweard Muybridge (1872-1885), eighteenth-century prints of ancien régime excess; taxonomic images of animals, food, and plants; limericks and nursery rhymes; and quotes from sources as diverse as the eighteenth-century Shawnee chief Blue Jacket and French artist Paul Gauguin.
