About the Artwork
This proud portrait of multiple generations of a German farming family belongs to August Sanders’s ambitious series Menschen des 20. Jahrhunderts (People of the Twentieth Century). Originally inspired by the farmers of Westerwald, Germany — who he believed were the best representative of the common man — Sander went on to produce a photographic study of types of German citizens that he categorized into subject groups based on profession or social class. Over the course of this monumental project, Sander created more than six hundred portraits.
