About the Artwork

The history of printmaking includes many prints made by one artist copying the work of another. Occasionally these reproductive prints were admired for the skill they displayed but rarely were they considered equal in creativity to the original work they copied. This print by Manet is based on the artist's painting of the same subject now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. By reworking the composition into a print version himself rather than turning the task over to a collaborator, Manet demonstrated his belief that the process involved more than rote transcription. His intention was to create a graphic equivalent of the painting. Dead Christ with Angels was never issued in an edition, so only a few impressions exist.
