March 23, 2017 (Detroit)—The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) welcomes Toronto-based floral designer Bruno Duarte for a floral design talk and demonstration, “Leaf Manipulation/Floral Art,” at the museum on Monday, April 24. Duarte is the speaker for the 18th annual Elizabeth Sites Kuhlman Lecture, sponsored by the museum support group Friends of Art & Flowers. This is a ticketed event.
Duarte grew up on his family’s farm on the island of Madeira, Portugal surrounded by flowers. He takes a sculptural approach to floral design, physically bending and shaping organic materials and other found objects to create works of art.
His work has captured the attention of many international celebrities, including Renée Zellweger, Patti LaBelle and Sir Elton John, to name a few. His work has been displayed at restaurant openings, luxury condominiums, hotels, art galleries and private homes. Duarte is a regular contributor to lifestyle and garden magazines, which highlight his seasonal and wedding décor.
The lecture and demonstration begin at 10:30 a.m. and are followed by a luncheon. Tickets are $30 for the lecture only and $60 for the lecture and lunch. Cash valet is available at the circle drive behind the museum, off John R. For tickets call 313-833-4005 or go to dia.org/tickets. Seating is limited, and advanced purchase is recommended.
