Tons of fun at Detroit Institute of Arts this Thanksgiving weekend

November 7, 2017 (Detroit)—There’s something for everyone at the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) this Thanksgiving weekend. Programs are free with museum admission (unless otherwise noted), which is free for residents of Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties. Here are some of the things to enjoy:
Friday–Sunday, Nov. 24–26
Drop-in Art-Making: Puppets: Noon–9 p.m. Friday, Noon–4 p.m. Saturday–Sunday.
Drawing in the Galleries: 6–9 p.m. Friday, Noon–4 p.m. Saturday–Sunday.
General Guided Tours: Friday, 1 & 6 p.m.
General and Family-Friendly Guided Tours: Saturday–Sunday, 1 & 3 p.m.
Puppet Performance: “Migration”: 2 p.m. each day
Hobey Ford turns to the natural world of animals to explore the wonders of migration through the story of a Mexican girl named Beatriz and her migration to the United States. The story of Beatriz’ journey is juxtaposed with the stories of animals that migrate. The puppets in Migration are Ford’s original “Foamies,” carved foam rod puppets. These extremely realistic puppets are performed behind a thin cloth with Ford’s artwork projected on it. The scenes are animated to take the audience along on the journey of these incredible creatures.
Friday, November 24
Friday Night Live: The Lincoln Trio: 7 & 8:30 p.m.
The Grammy-nominated Lincoln Trio performs well-known chamber works with contemporary touches.
Detroit Film Theatre: “The Square”: 7 p.m.
The director of a renowned contemporary art museum is persuaded that the institution would benefit from a form of bold performance art that could become a social media hit and agrees to an installation meant to promote “responsible behavior.” When the director’s phone is stolen, events take an alarming new direction, accelerated by the director’s dalliance with a reporter whose behavior redefines “inappropriate.” In English, Swedish and Danish, with English subtitles. Tickets: $9.50 general admission, $7.50 seniors, students, DIA Members.
Detroit Film Theatre: “Chavela”: 9:45 p.m.
“Chavela” looks at the life of beloved singer Chavela Vargas, whose renditions of Mexican music when she returned to the stage late in life earned her a new level of fame. When she was 14, Chavela ran away to sing in the streets of Mexico City and was a household name by the 1950s. She was also a sexual pioneer, having many female lovers at a time when being out in Mexico was dangerous. In Spanish with English subtitles. Tickets: $9.50 general admission, $7.50 seniors, students, DIA Members.
