Music, family activities, drawing in the galleries and so much more this September at the Detroit Institute of Arts

June 30, 2016 (Detroit)—This September the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) offers activities and films for families, along with music, drop-in workshops, drawing in the galleries and more. This is the last month to see “The Open Road: Photography and the American Road Trip,” on display through Sept. 11. Also in its final month is “Samuel F.B. Morse’s ‘Gallery of the Louvre and the Art of Invention” on display until Sept. 18.



Programs are free with museum admission and free for residents of Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties unless otherwise noted. For more information, call (313) 833-7900 or visit www.dia.org. 



General Guided Tours: Tuesdays–Fridays, 1 p.m.

Enjoy a guided tour of select galleries for an overview of the collection.



General and Family Guided Tours: Saturdays–Sundays, 1 & 3 p.m. 

Enjoy a guided tour of select galleries or explore family and kid-friendly tours. 



Senior Thursdays: 1 p.m.

The first Thursday of the month features a guided gallery tour; the second a talk; the third an art-making activity; and the fourth a film. In months with a fifth Thursday, a second gallery tour will be offered.



Detroit City Chess Club: Fridays, 4–8 p.m. 

The club’s mission is to teach area students the game and life lessons. Members have won state, regional and national competitions. People wanting to learn to play chess should show up between 4 and 6 p.m. There will be no teaching between 6 and 8 p.m., but visitors can play chess.



Drawing in the Galleries (for all ages): Fridays, 6–9 p.m.; Sundays, Noon–4 p.m.

Friday Night Live: Jim Campilongo Trio: 7 & 8:30 p.m.

Jim Campilongo plays country, bluegrass, blues and rock and roll on his 1959 Telecaster guitar. Joining Campilongo are Josh Dion on the drums and Tony Scherr on bass.



Friday, September 9

Friday Night Live: Yehudi Menuhin Tribute: 7 p.m.

Performers to be announced.



Detroit Film Theatre: “Yehudi Menuhin, The Violin of the Century”: 9:30 p.m.

Filmed at his home in Greece, violinist Yehudi Menuhin takes the audience through his many photo albums, highlighting moments in his life and important eras in musical history. Director Bruno Monsaingeon will give a brief talk along with a Q-&-A period following the film. Tickets: $9.50 for general admission and $7.50 for members, seniors and students.

Mexican tenor Francisco Bedy performs as part of an ongoing collaboration between the DIA and the Consulate of Mexico featuring performers from Mexico.



Saturday, September 17

Detroit Institute of Awesome: DFT Animation Club: “A Town Called Panic”: 2 p.m.

By using stop-motion animation, the creators of “A Town Called Panic” have crafted a world for three best friends. The toy horse, cowboy and American Indian may be small, but they have plenty of room for friendship, love, birthday presents, online shopping, music lessons and home improvements. Adult language used sparingly. In French with English subtitles. Tickets: $5 for general admission, free for DIA members.

Sunday Music Bar: Buddy Budson: 1–4 p.m.

Detroit pianist Buddy Budson performs jazz and pop standards. 



Detroit Institute of Awesome: DFT Animation Club: “A Town Called Panic”: 2 p.m.

Friday, September 23

Detroit Film Theatre: Alloy Orchestra: 7:30 p.m.

Alloy Orchestra writes scores for and performs live to classic silent films. An unusual combination of percussion and state-of-the-art electronics gives the group the ability to create any sound imaginable. Accompanied films include the premiere of the newly restored 1925 drama of crime and passion “Variety,” along with the fully restored version of science-fiction masterwork “Metropolis.” Tickets: $9.50 for general admission and $7.50 for members, seniors and students.

Mistral Winds Detroit performs a variety of classics. The quintet is made up of Catherine Sherwin on flute, Kerry Russo on oboe, Linda Borushko on the clarinet, Jonathan Boyd on bassoon and Connie Hutchinson on horn.

Friday Night Live: Trio Nova Mundi: 7 & 8:30 p.m.

Nova Mundi performs music by Amy Beach, JacobTV, Manuel Ponce and Paul Schoenfield. Maureen Conlon Gutierrez plays the violin, Elissa Kohanski cello and Becky Billock piano.
