July 7, 2022 (Detroit) – July at the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) brings a variety of fun and diverse events for children and adults. From the opening of the exhibition, Conscious Response: Photographers Changing the Way We See, to the weekly Drawing in the Galleries workshops, there’s plenty of excitement for everyone.

July also offers the opportunity to see high-quality reproductions from the museum’s collection in outdoor venues throughout Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties. The DIA’s popular Inside|Out program will be on view in over 20 Metro Detroit communities through November 30, 2022.

General admission is always free for residents of Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties.

Exhibitions

  • Van Gogh’s Artistic Roots: The Hague School and French Realism on view through January 29, 2023.

Van Gogh particularly admired the painterly innovations of the Hague School––a group named for the city in the Netherlands where its core artists lived and worked beginning about 1870.

  • Wayne County High School Art Exhibition on view through July 31, 2022.

More than 50 imaginative works created by Wayne County’s emerging artists will be on display.

Conscious Response explores the history of visual storytelling and image-making as seen through the eyes of over 25 artists.

Small containers and boxes morph into fantastic percussion instruments when dried beans, rice, feathers and fun papers are added.

Concert of Colors: RicanStruction 1 p.m.

Led by Latin percussionist, activist, educator and drummer, Osvaldo “Ozzie” Rivera, RicanStruction is Ozzie’s latest performance group celebrating the movement, the rhythms and the cultural richness of Puerto Rico. Performance takes place on the North Lawn. Info at www.concertofcolors.com.

 Concert of Colors: Detroit Excellence in Youth Arts 1 p.m.

A DEYA “Artists Kickback” coordinated by the Youth Artistic Directors, in Partnership with Grow Detroit Young Talent (GDYT), will take place from 5-8 PM after the performances in the courtyard of the Hellenic Museum. This is an opportunity for the Detroit young artists to meet in a casual setting to share their creativity and build community across organizations. Participants in the Youth Stage, Youth Art Fair and youth employed by summer arts programs through GDYT, as well as other committed youth artists are welcome. Concert of Colors: Aaron BraveSoul 2:30 p.m.

Aaron "BraveSoul" Parrott is one of the top steel pan players in the nation, winning numerous awards and trailblazing his path through the Caribbean and urban communities. Roots Vibrations is a musical force celebrating authentic Caribbean sounds.  Concert of Colors: Marion Hayden Presents Eternal Spirit: The Music of Alice Coltrane 5 p.m.

 Concert of Colors: Paul Krawl and the Kingsnakes 5:30 p.m.

Paul Krawl is one of the many musicians who had a role in defining the era of late sixties blues-based rock & roll. Paul Krawl and the Kingsnakes have toured in Europe and credited as being one of the top R&B and dance bands in England and Japan. Performance takes place on the Wolverine Stage.  Concert of Colors: Indika Reggae 6 p.m.

Indika Reggae is one of the most innovative and influential reggae bands in the Midwest, having won numerous recognitions and awards. By incorporating and expanding their musical repertoire to include genres such as soca, calypso, punta, reggae, dancehall, R&B, jazz, and even some kompa, Indika, with their highly energetic, multi-talented, and versatile frontman, Uroy Mushla, have performed at venues all over the U.S. Performance takes place on the North Lawn.  Concert of Colors: Tumbao Bravo 7 p.m.

Tumbao Bravo was formed in 2003 by reedman Paul VornHagen. This exciting Cuban Jazz Combo has released five CDs of mostly original compositions entertaining fans around the world. The band has won three Detroit Music Awards and each member brings a high level of experience with Afro-Cuban music. Performance takes place on the Wolverine Stage. Info at www.concertofcolors.com.

 Concert of Colors: David Rudder & Universal Xpression 8 p.m.

Hailing from Trinidad and Tobago, David Rudder is often considered one of Calypso’s most successful artists and performers. Keyboardist, songwriter, arranger and energetic front man Richard “Richie B” Parris leads the Caribbean rhythms of the Detroit-based Universal Xpression.  Concert of Colors: Karsh Kale 8 p.m.

Described by Billboard Magazine as a “visionary composer and producer,” Kale has created a new genre of electronica music and culture, incorporating Indian classical music, rock, jazz, and hip hop. Performance takes place in the Detroit Film Theatre Auditorium. Info at www.concertofcolors.com.

 Concert of Colors: Steve Somers Band 8:30 p.m.

Steve Somers is a guitarist, band leader, composer, educator, recording engineer and producer. His band plays a variety of music styles from Motown to Classic Rock. Concert of Colors: Yoga with Mystery Bliss 11 a.m.

Concert of Colors Yoga is an all-levels, Hatha yoga class that is accessible to all ages. Yoga teachers Elizabeth Crenshaw (Yaktown Yoga) and Cindy Spires (Detroit Community Yoga) will guide participants through the yoga poses and sequences. Mystery Bliss will perform live, creating an ethereal musical backdrop to the movements. The 70-minute class will end in a guided meditation. Participants should bring water, a yoga mat or towel/blanket, and sun protection since the class will be outside. Participants will be required to sign a liability waiver. Some yoga mats will be available for use, but yoga mats and backpacks should not be brought inside the DIA, so please plan accordingly. Yoga class will take place on the North Lawn. The Island Guys are a talented Caribbean steel drum band based out of Detroit Michigan. In addition to performing live steel pan music, this versatile group also performs a wide variety of other music such as jazz, Latin, pop, Motown, salsa, top 40 and Hawaiian. Yabba Griffiths is a multi-talented musician whose repertoire includes vocalist, songwriter, performer, arranger, band leader, guitarist, and producer. Concert of Colors: Nanny Assiss & Sounds of Brazil 2 p.m.

A singer, drummer/percussionist, and songwriter working in Bossa Nova, Brazilian Jazz, Forro and Afro-Brazilian instrumental traditions. Performance takes place in the Detroit Film Theatre Auditorium. Info at www.concertofcolors.com.

Concert of Colors: Flowers of Medina 2:30 p.m.

The Flowers of Medina are six Arab Muslim women who perform Sufi music based in Koranic verses. They are truly a heavenly Detroit-based acapella group. Performance takes place on the North Lawn. Info at www.concertofcolors.com.

Concert of Colors: Jarrod Champion 3 p.m.

Jarrod Champion is a self-taught pianist, vocalist, organist, and songwriter/composer. Born in a suburb east of Detroit, Michigan, he's the son of two working-class parents, both trained pianists. Originally based in rock and roll, Jarrod eventually spread out into the prominent jazz, blues, funk, soul and traditional country/folk circuits around Detroit.  Concert of Colors: Martha Redbone 4:30 p.m.

Martha Redbone is a Native and African-American singer, composer, educator and performer known for her unique mix of folk, blues, and gospel. She burst onto the scene at the 2002 Native American Music Awards, and her album Skintalk won the Independent Music Award for Best R&B Album in 2007.  Concert of Colors: Battle of Santiago 6:30 p.m.

Battle of Santiago combines ancient Afro-Cuban rhythms and chants with a distinctly Canadian post-rock spirit and sensibility. Fused by dynamic elements of jazz, the result is a party-forward experience that has brought them to stages across the globe, including NYC’s legendary Joe’s Pub, and festivals across Canada, the US, Spain, France, The Netherlands and more. BSAC is an NYC-territory band, described as “a place where Sun Ra’s Arkestra meets George Clinton’s Funkadelic/Parliament.” In 2022, BSAC continues to celebrate the idea of “never playing anything the same way once…” while giving tribute to their sonic Sensei, Maestro Lawrence Butch Morris (1947-2013) for showing them “The Way” of Conducted Improvisation. Indika Reggae is one of the most innovative and influential reggae bands in the Midwest, having won numerous recognitions and awards. By incorporating and expanding their musical repertoire to include genres such as soca, calypso, punta, reggae, dancehall, R&B, jazz, and even some kompa, Indika, with their highly energetic, multi-talented, and versatile frontman, Uroy Mushla, have performed at venues all over the U.S. Performance takes place on the North Lawn.  Concert of Colors: Tumbao Bravo 7 p.m.

Tumbao Bravo was formed in 2003 by reedman Paul VornHagen. This exciting Cuban Jazz Combo has released five CDs of mostly original compositions entertaining fans around the world.  Concert of Colors: David Rudder & Universal Xpression 8 p.m.

Hailing from Trinidad and Tobago, David Rudder is often considered one of Calypso’s most successful artists and performers. Keyboardist, songwriter, arranger and energetic front man Richard “Richie B” Parris leads the Caribbean rhythms of the Detroit-based Universal Xpression. Steve Somers is a guitarist, band leader, composer, educator, recording engineer and producer. His band plays a variety of music styles from Motown to Classic Rock. Concert of Colors: Yoga with Mystery Bliss 11 a.m.

Concert of Colors Yoga is an all-levels, Hatha yoga class that is accessible to all ages. Yoga teachers Elizabeth Crenshaw (Yaktown Yoga) and Cindy Spires (Detroit Community Yoga) will guide participants through the yoga poses and sequences. Mystery Bliss will perform live, creating an ethereal musical backdrop to the movements. The 70-minute class will end in a guided meditation. Participants should bring water, a yoga mat or towel/blanket, and sun protection since the class will be outside. Participants will be required to sign a liability waiver. Some yoga mats will be available for use, but yoga mats and backpacks should not be brought inside the DIA, so please plan accordingly. Yoga class will take place on the North Lawn.  Drop-In Workshop: Container Rattles 12-4 p.m.

Small containers and boxes morph into fantastic percussion instruments when dried beans, rice, feathers and fun papers are added.

The Island Guys are a talented Caribbean steel drum band based out of Detroit Michigan. In addition to performing live steel pan music, this versatile group also performs a wide variety of other music such as jazz, Latin, pop, Motown, salsa, top 40 and Hawaiian. Concert of Colors: Jarrod Champion 3 p.m.

Jarrod Champion is a self-taught pianist, vocalist, organist, and songwriter/composer. Born in a suburb east of Detroit, Michigan, he's the son of two working-class parents, both trained pianists. Originally based in rock and roll, Jarrod eventually spread out into the prominent jazz, blues, funk, soul and traditional country/folk circuits around Detroit. Martha Redbone is a Native and African-American singer, composer, educator and performer known for her unique mix of folk, blues, and gospel. She burst onto the scene at the 2002 Native American Music Awards, and her album Skintalk won the Independent Music Award for Best R&B Album in 2007. BSAC is an NYC-territory band, described as “a place where Sun Ra’s Arkestra meets George Clinton’s Funkadelic/Parliament.” In 2022, BSAC continues to celebrate the idea of “never playing anything the same way once…” while giving tribute to their sonic Sensei, Maestro Lawrence Butch Morris (1947-2013) for showing them “The Way” of Conducted Improvisation.
