Detroit Institute of Arts to Welcome Back Student Field Trip Groups in October All fields trips will be self-guided by classroom teachers at this time

Updated Sep 23, 2021

September 23, 2021 (DETROIT) -- The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) has announced the return of in-person field trips. Starting October 12, school groups can sign up for a classroom teacher-guided field trip in the museum.

Even though the field trips will not be led by DIA gallery teachers at this time, the visits will allow classroom teachers to lead their students through the museum galleries for a unique experience. The museum provides helpful online teaching resources, including graphic organizers tied to various curriculum areas, lesson plans, and writing prompts to all teachers who have signed up for a field trip.

Admission and bus transportation for school field trips is free for all K-12 schools in Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties. Prior to the pandemic, more than 90,000 students visited the DIA on field trips annually.

“We are so excited to welcome back students and educators to the DIA for field trips in October,” said Jason Gillespie, Director of Education Programs at the DIA. “It is hard to imagine that it has been 19 months since we’ve last heard the sounds of students and teachers exploring the galleries. Artie has missed you!”

Masks are currently required for all visitors at the museum. In addition, the museum cannot provide lunch or snack space for field trip groups at this time. To sign up for a field trip or get additional details before your scheduled visit to the museum, visit the DIA’s Field Trips page on the website.

Classrooms that are not able to visit the museum in person can still experience the DIA through the museum’s Virtual Field Trip program or DIA Delivered kits. The virtual programs are led by a museum Gallery Teacher via a PowerPoint presentation with high-resolution images. These programs can be hosted through the museum’s virtual meeting platform (Microsoft Teams), or through the preferred platform of the school and shared with students in a classroom, or on their personal devices at home. Virtual field trips can also be scheduled on the museum’s field trip webpage.

DIA Delivered K-12 is a program for K-12 teachers and students that brings toolboxes filled with a variety of items to your classroom, providing students with opportunities for close-looking and exploration. Designed to create a window into the DIA’s world-renown collection from afar, each toolbox offers a variety of curriculum-based activities, connecting your students to some of our favorite works of art! Learn more about DIA Delivered on the museum’s website.

The museum continues to monitor the evolving COVID-19 pandemic. All details are subject to change. The museum hopes to offer in-person guided field trips in early 2022.
