Detroit Institute of Arts to show silent film “The Passion of Joan of Arc” with Rackham Choir and Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings performing Richard Einhorn’s “Voices of Light”

March 5, 2018 (Detroit)—The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) presents a multimedia celebration in honor of Women's History Month with the classic 1928 silent film “The Passion of Joan of Arc” accompanied by the Rackham Choir and Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings performing composer Richard Einhorn’s “Voices of Light” March 23–25. “Voices of Light” merges Carl Theodor Dreyer's legendary silent film masterpiece “The Passion of Joan of Arc,” widely considered to be one of the greatest films ever made, with a performance of Einhorn’s 1994 “Voices of Light,” a musical score for choir, soloists and orchestra composed specifically to accompany the film.
Einhorn’s modern score turns to ancient feminist writings by mystics, poets and visionaries to highlight women's inherent power and importance in history. Four female singers perform together as the Voice of Joan. Suzanne Mallare Acton will conduct Rackham Choir and Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings for this multimedia program.
“The Passion of Joan of Arc” is a haunting and powerful depiction of the trial of Joan of Arc, an illiterate young woman born in 1412, who at the age of 19 led a French army against English occupation. She was captured, burned at the stake and eventually martyred and canonized a saint. The only remaining print of the acclaimed film was believed to be destroyed in a fire, but a virtually complete print was found in 1981 and restored in 1986.
“Voices of Light” is presented by Rackham Choir in collaboration with the DIA’s Friends of Detroit Film Theatre.
