The Detroit Institute of Arts Seeks Community Participants For 2021 Inside|Out Installation | The museum’s popular outdoor art program brings high-quality reproductions of DIA art into the community

Updated Aug 17, 2020

August 17, 2020 (DETROIT) The Detroit Institute of Arts’ (DIA) popular Inside|Out program is searching for communities, downtown development authorities and arts organizations in Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties interested in hosting the DIA’s Inside|Out Program in 2021. Participating communities will enjoy a May through October installation of six to ten reproductions of DIA masterpieces, typically clustered within walking or bike-riding distance of each other.

Entering into its 12th year, Inside|Out shares the richness and diversity of the museum’s extensive collection outside the museum walls in places where people live, work and play. This year, over 125 reproductions were featured across 25 local communities in Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties as part of the program.

Cities and businesses that take part in Inside|Out will be featured on a map on the DIA’s website and promoted on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube. The museum will also assist community leaders in developing educational programs in conjunction with Inside|Out to engage people with the reproductions and inspire them to visit the museum to see the originals. Past community hosted events have included a wine-tasting bus tour, bike and walking tours, talks at local libraries and art galleries and art festivals. Due to the circumstances of 2020, communities also hosted virtual events for the first time this year.

How to Apply

Interested communities are asked to submit an application by October 16, 2020. An application does not guarantee a slot but will help the museum determine locations for next year. Preference will be given to communities in Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties and to those that have not participated before. Municipalities are chosen based on a variety of criteria including community interest, desired outcomes, and location.

To complete an application to participate in the Inside|Out program visit https://www.dia.org/events/insideout-2021-call-participation. Applications can then be submitted to communityengagement@dia.org. Communities that are selected to participate in 2021 will be notified in November. The website will be updated with the exact date.
