Detroit Institute of Arts partners with social service agencies in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties for ninth annual Community Group Art Show

Nov. 2, 2017 (Detroit)—The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) presents its ninth annual Community Group Art Show from Nov. 15 to Dec. 31 in the museum’s Walter Gibbs Learning Center. The artworks were created by participants in the DIA’s Community Group Program, a partnership between the museum and human service agencies in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties.

The DIA’s Community Group Program has been serving social service agencies in the Detroit area for more than 20 years, providing meaningful experiences through art with gallery tours and hands-on art making. Current groups in the program include the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center, the Luella Hannan Foundation, Piquette Square for Veterans, Macomb County Community Mental Health, Pontiac SUN TimeBank.
The Community Group Program is focused on providing a safe, nurturing environment for participants’ creative expression and socialization, while building positive relationships within the community. The annual community group art show, in particular, provides a unique opportunity for group members to share their thoughts about their artistic work.
“This is one of the many, though lesser-known, services the DIA provides to tri-county organizations,” said Salvador Salort-Pons, DIA director. “The Community Group Program and annual art show enable participants to express their deeply personal experiences and emotions through their artworks.”

- Piquette Square for Veterans
- John D. Dingell Veterans Affairs Medical Center
- Hannan Memorial Foundation
- Mariner's Inn
- Sexual Assault Services for Holistic Healing and Awareness (SASHA)
Macomb County
- Macomb County Community Mental Health (MCCMH)
- Comprehensive Services for the Developmentally Disabled (CSDD)
- Creative Employment Opportunities (CEO)
Oakland County
- Pontiac SUN TimeBank
Museum Hours and Admission
9 a.m.–4 p.m. Tuesdays–Thursdays, 9 a.m.–10 p.m. Fridays, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. General admission (excludes ticketed exhibitions) is free for Wayne, Oakland and Macomb county residents and DIA members. For all others, $14 for adults, $9 for seniors ages 62+, $8 for college students, $6 for ages 6–17. For membership information, call 313-833-7971.
