Detroit Institute of Arts Names Anthony L. Smith as Vice President of Learning and Audience Engagement

Veteran Arts Educator to Lead Museum’s Efforts to Serve Community with Inclusive Education and Public Programs
DETROIT (June 16, 2022) – The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) has named Detroit arts educator Anthony L. Smith as the museum’s Vice President for Learning and Audience Engagement. Smith will join the DIA on July 12, 2022.
Smith currently serves as the Deputy Executive Director of Fine and Performing Arts in the Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD), where he is responsible for improving student achievement and expression in arts and music, managing the arts and music department budgets, and developing and implementing the district’s art and music curriculum. With over 30 years of experience, Smith previously taught fine and performing arts at the Detroit School of Arts, Cody High School, and Cass Technical High School. Smith has been recognized for creating and restoring art programs in all DPSCD schools; creating and managing district-wide art events; and providing leadership and guidance to staff for educational and artistic community programs and workshops.
“During my tenure at DPSCD, I have been able to work closely with the DIA on a number of projects,” said Smith. “I’m excited to build on that relationship and bring a fresh perspective to the important work the DIA has been doing in the community.”
In this new role, Smith will provide an innovative and inclusive vision for learning strategies for the museum. He will lead the teams responsible for artmaking, public programs, interpretation, and the K–12 programs for students and educators, while collaborating and coordinating with the curatorial, exhibitions and administrative departments across the museum to meet the DIA’s strategic goals.
“Anthony’s deep experience in the education field and his commitment to inclusive programming will make him a tremendous asset to the DIA team,” said Judith Dolkart, Deputy Director for Art, Education and Programs. “I look forward to working with him to continue to bring high-quality programs to the residents of Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties.”
