Updated Jul 13, 2018

July 11, 2018 (Detroit)—The Detroit Institute of Arts’ (DIA) Volunteer Council is hosting the 2018 Volunteer Committees of Art Museums (VCAM) conference at the museum Sept. 24–27. VCAM is an internationally recognized resource for information exchange among art museum volunteers in the U.S. and Canada.

The VCAM conference, held every three years, attracts a diverse audience including museum staff who support volunteers; volunteers who hold, or aspire to, leadership roles at their museums; and those with an academic or general interest in museum work.

“VCAM is an opportunity to learn from highly respected arts institutions about their volunteerism and community involvement strategies,” said Phil Rivera, director of Volunteer Services at the DIA. “This is all about exchanging ideas, sharing creativity, and leveraging best practices to create a future of art museums in North America that is truly thriving.”

This year’s conference topics include “Enhancing Volunteerism,” “Community Engagement” and “The Digital World.” Representatives from top U.S. and Canadian museums ranging from the Seattle Museum of Art, Vancouver Art Gallery and the Art Museum at Washington University in St. Louis will share their insights.

The keynote speaker is Richard Evans, co-founder and president of EmcArts, a social enterprise for learning and innovation in the arts. Evans is well recognized as an innovator in the international art community and is the former co-director of the National Endowment for the Arts’ Advancement Program.
