Detroit Institute of Arts’ Friends of Art & Flowers presents “The Art of Gardening,” by Bill Thomas | Thomas featured speaker for the 2018 Betsy Campbell Lecture

October 10, 2018 (Detroit)—The Detroit Institute of Arts’ (DIA) auxiliary Friends of Art & Flowers (FAF) welcomes Bill Thomas, executive director and head gardener at Chanticleer Gardens near Philadelphia, to give the talk “The Art of Gardening” for its annual Betsy Campbell lecture on Oct. 27 at 2 p.m. The event is free with museum admission, which is free for Wayne, Oakland and Macomb county residents.
Thomas, who is also chair of Greater Philadelphia Gardens, has a long history of creativity and development in the horticultural world, including leadership roles in mentoring future public garden professionals. Utilizing environmentally responsible practices, he has led the staff at Chanticleer for 15 years in creating an inventive, visually exciting, and awe-inspiring experience for garden visitors.
Thomas co-authored “The Art of Gardening,” for which he received the American Horticultural Society (AHS) Book Award. He was also honored with the AHS Professional Award in 2016 and the Scott Medal in 2017, given by the Scott Arboretum of Swarthmore College to those who have made an outstanding national contribution to the science and art of gardening.
Museum Hours and Admission
9 a.m.–4 p.m. Tuesdays–Thursdays, 9 a.m.–10 p.m. Fridays, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. General admission (excludes ticketed exhibitions) is free for Wayne, Oakland and Macomb county residents and DIA members. For all others, $14 for adults, $9 for seniors ages 62+, $8 for college students, $6 for ages 6–17. For membership information, call 313-833-7971.
