Detroit Institute of Arts expands popular Inside|Out program to Michigan’s culturally underserved areas with funding from Institute of Museum and Library Services Highly competitive grant supports three years of statewide program; Munising and Sturgis

March 8, 2017 (Detroit)—The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) received a highly competitive Museums for America grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to expand the popular Inside|Out program, which brings high-quality reproductions of masterpieces from the museum’s collection to outdoor venues, to Michigan’s culturally underserved areas. This statewide initiative grew out of a pilot program that the DIA launched in 2015.

Selected communities must be in one of the 43 counties identified as underserved by the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs. The $105,200 award supports the installation of 15 reproductions and related programming in two communities annually over the next three years. Munising (Alger County) and Sturgis (St. Joseph County) are the first to take part. Installation will begin the week of May 14, and the works will remain on view through the end of October 2017.

“The IMLS Museums for America grant enables the DIA to transform from a community resource to a community catalyst,” said DIA Director Salvador Salort-Pons. “Through Inside|Out, we will increase local civic engagement, elevate residents’ pride in their communities and establish a framework to sustain arts and cultural activities in underserved counties.”

The museum will work with participating communities to place reproductions in locations within walking or bike-riding distance of each other. Exact locations are still being determined and, once finalized, will be featured on an interactive map on the DIA’s website, dia.org/insideout. The DIA will also provide cities with support and consultation to develop programming related to their Inside|Out reproductions, such as walking tours, talks, festivals and more.

Facebook users can follow Inside|Out updates and share their Inside|Out experiences on the Inside|Out Facebook page. People can also follow updates on Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat (@DIADetroit) using the hashtags #DIAInsideOut and #InsideOutUSA.

Applications for the summer 2018 season will be available between January 1 and February 17 next year. Contact Jillian Reese at jreese@dia.org for more information on how to participate.
