Detroit Institute of Arts celebrates Detroit Dance City Festival with performances, dance parties, movies and more

July 26, 2017—The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) is hosting an array of events Aug. 18–20 for this year’s Detroit Dance City Festival (DDCF), a community-building event led by ARTLAB J that celebrates dance in its various forms and disciplines. DDCF showcases the work of more than 80 local, national and international performing artists and companies, with most of the events being held at the DIA.

DDCF will also host a variety of diverse dance workshops led by the field’s leading practitioners, whose styles include modern, jazz, ballet and hip-hop. Aside from the performances and workshops, festival participants are invited to relax, network, and meet the artists and other festival goers at the official after parties each evening. 

Unless otherwise noted, activities are free with museum admission, which is free for Wayne, Oakland and Macomb county residents.

Friday–Sunday, August 18–20

Movers & Shakers Lunch: 11:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m., Crystal Gallery

Enjoy an informational lunch featuring artist talks, panel discussions and guest speakers. The event is free and open to the public, but food and beverages must be purchased.

Summer Stage: 1:30–3:30 p.m., Rivera Court

Enjoy dancers, musicians and performance artists in the museum’s spectacular Rivera court.

Friday–Saturday, August 18–19

Choreographers Showcase: 7–8:30 p.m., Detroit Film Theatre

More than 30 artists from Detroit to New York, Los Angeles and elsewhere were chosen by ArtLab J to showcase their work. For more information and ticketing, visit detroitdancecityfestival.com.

Friday Funk Night: 9–11 p.m., Outdoors on the Woodward Plaza

One of the highlights of DDCF, Friday Funk Night is an exciting late-night event featuring Detroit’s best dance crews and performers, with the opportunity for the public to freestyle on the dance floor. This year, DDCF integrates a cross-cultural experience by bringing Global Pungmul Institute It to the mix.

Saturday, August 19

Dance Film Fest: 3–5 p.m., Lecture Hall

Selected by ArtLab J, this film fest features works by choreographers and filmmakers interested in working at the intersection of film and movement.

Sunday, August 20

Detroit Dance City Festival Celebration: 4–8 p.m.; reception in Crystal Gallery 4-4:45 p.m.; performance in Detroit Film Theatre 6–8 p.m.

A VIP reception and a performance by featured artists celebrate the closing of three-days of dance in Detroit. This is a ticketed event. Go to detroitdancecityfestival.com for ticket information.

9 a.m.–4 p.m. Tuesdays–Thursdays, 9 a.m.–10 p.m. Fridays, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. General admission (excludes ticketed exhibitions) is free for Wayne, Oakland and Macomb county residents and DIA members.
