June 25, 2020 (DETROIT)—The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) will reopen its doors on Friday, July 10 with new hours of operation and enhanced safety procedures in place after a four-month shutdown due to the COVID-19 state of emergency. The DIA, along with other Midtown museums and cultural institutions, and Midtown Detroit Inc., have collaborated with NSF International (NSF) to create new safety protocols in advance of a collective reopening date.  

Opening weekend, July 10-12, will be dedicated to museum members and residents of Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties only.  

“While we are looking forward to re-opening our doors, especially for our tri-county visitors, the health and well-being of our visitors and staff is of the utmost importance,” said DIA Director Salvador Salort-Pons. “The new operating hours and safety procedures we have put in place are aimed to ensure visitors feel comfortable and are able to enjoy their return to our galleries.”  

The NSF created a re-opening guide and toolkit that includes practices, protocols and recommendations for safely operating during the COVID-19 pandemic. The guide was informed by recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Department of Health and Human Services pursuant to the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), and the World Health Organization (WHO), that adhere to city, state and federal mandates. All aspects of normal museum operations have undergone an evaluation by NSF, modifications were made where needed and will be continually be updated to ensure the safety of visitors and staff.  

Upon reopening DIA visitors can expect the following:  

  • Expanded cleaning and disinfection of public spaces and work areas. 
  • Frequent handwashing is encouraged and hand-sanitation dispensers will be available throughout the museum. 
  • Visitors age 3 and older along with museum staff and contractors will be required to wear masks inside the museum. 
  • Cashless and touchless transactions will be made available wherever possible. 
  • Hours of operations have been reduced to allow for additional cleaning. 
  • Tickets will be timed to control attendance levels and can be reserved online in advance at www.dia.org or by calling 313-833-4005. A limited number of tickets will be available for each time slot.  
  • The Farnsworth door will be the designated museum entrance point. Entry will not be permitted through other doors.  
  • All visitors and staff will have their temperatures taken upon entry using a touchless thermal imaging camera. 
  • Kresge Court and Café DIA will remain closed at this time. 
  • Coat check and lockers are not available; small bags only are permitted. 
  • New wayfinding and markers will be in place to encourage social distancing of at least six feet and safe navigation of the museum.  
  • Field trips, group tours and all in-museum programming are discontinued until further notice.  

New Hours of Operation  

  • Wednesday–Friday: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. 
  • Saturday and Sunday: 10 a.m.–5 p.m.  
  • Monday and Tuesday: CLOSED
