The Detroit Institute of Arts and Friends of Asian Arts and Culture celebrate India with a weekend-long event featuring a keynote speech from His Excellency Harsh Vardhan Shringla, the Indian Ambassador to the United States

March 8, 2019 (Detroit) – The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) is continuing its year-long celebration of the Arts of Asia with a two-day event to showcase the art and culture of India. “Celebrate India” will be held at the museum April 6-7, 2019, with a special keynote from the Indian Ambassador to the United States, his Excellency Harsh Vardhan Shringla, on Saturday. All activities throughout the weekend are free with museum admission, which is free for residents of Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties.
“This festival allows our visitors to expand their experience of India and Southeast Asian arts and culture,” said Salvador Salort-Pons, DIA Director. “Our newly installed Robert and Katherine Jacobs Asian Wing shares histories and culture that can’t be found in books or television. By celebrating India, we rejoice the cultural richness, the excellence in the arts and the extraordinary diversity of the communities that we are honored to serve in the region.”
On Saturday, April 6, 2019, his Excellency the Ambassador of India will deliver a keynote speech from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. in the Detroit Film Theatre. Other events throughout the weekend reflect traditional and contemporary Indian culture and include Bollywood films, folk and classical dancing, poetry readings, yoga workshops and many hands-on activities for children of all ages.
