Detroit Institute of Arts and Detroit Puppeteers Guild celebrate Annual Day of Puppetry with “Peter and the Wolf” and marionette workshop

February 19, 2018 (Detroit)—The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA), in partnership with the Detroit Puppeteers Guild, presents “A Day of Puppetry” with performances of “Peter and the Wolf” on March 10 and 11 at 2 p.m. and a marionette workshop on March 10 at 3:30 p.m. The events are free with museum admission, which is free for Wayne, Oakland and Macomb county residents.
National Marionette Theatre’s adaptation of Prokofiev’s “Peter and the Wolf,” a show that has enchanted audiences since its premier in 1936, follows the adventures of a boy trying to capture a wolf. The artists of the National Marionette Theatre bring this symphonic fairy tale to life with exquisitely crafted marionettes, scrolling scenery, and the beautiful music of Prokofiev’s orchestral score.
The Detroit Puppeteers Guild provides a closer look into marionette construction and manipulation in a workshop lead by the artists of the National Marionette Theatre, owned and operated by the Syrotiak family, who has been building and performing with marionettes since 1967. The workshop is for ages 12 and older, and is free, but registration is required. To register, call 313-833-4005 or go to www.dia.org.

9 a.m.–4 p.m. Tuesdays–Thursdays, 9 a.m.–10 p.m. Fridays, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. General admission (excludes ticketed exhibitions) is free for Wayne, Oakland and Macomb county residents and DIA members.
