Updated Feb 21, 2018

February 21, 2018 (Detroit)—The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) honors the culture of Japan with its annual celebration of Japanese Girl’s Day—Hinamatsuri—on Sunday, March 4 from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Activities are free with museum admission, which is free for residents of Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties.

Hinamatsuri is celebrated with a display of dolls representing a royal wedding from the Heian Period (794-1185 CE), set on a tiered platform covered with red felt. The DIA will have Hinamatsuridolls on view in the Great Hall, where Japan Cultural Development will have various booths and activities, including an ultra-modern tea room where a ceremony can be observed.

Demonstrations include a tea ceremony presented by the Japan Society of Detroit (JSD) Women’s Club, calligraphy by Kyoka Fujii of Kyoka Japanese Calligraphy Design, origami folding by Art Prize artist Stacie Tamaki and a kimono dressing demonstration, also presented by the JSD Women’s Club.

Other activities include a traditional musical performance by the Miyabi Ensemble, Japanese sweets workshops and ikebana (flower arranging) workshops by Ikebana International Detroit Chapter. Workshops have limited capacity and will be available on a first-come first served basis.

Presented by Japan Cultural Development, cosponsored by the Consulate General of Japan in Detroit and the Japan Business Society of Detroit.
