Many visitors know the Detroit Institute of Arts for its world-class collection, but inside the museum is one of the city’s best-kept cultural secrets: the Detroit Film Theatre. From award-winning international films to thought-provoking documentaries, the DFT offers a moviegoing experience that’s refreshingly different.

Part of the DIA’s 100-year-old original structure, the space has always served as a multi-purpose auditorium. Even then, it was equipped to screen motion pictures with sound, known at the time as “talkies.” As movies grew in popularity, the DIA officially christened the Detroit Film Theatre in 1974. More than 50 years later, the DFT continues to be Detroit’s destination for classic and contemporary cinema.

A special part of the DFT experience is time spent in the Crystal Gallery, located on the balcony level of the theatre. Open an hour before showtime, the space invites patrons to enjoy beverages and light fare in a setting that feels both grand and welcoming, with soaring ceilings, expansive windows, and plenty of seating.

The theatre itself is a work of art, featuring elegant Renaissance-style design details. With classic theater seating and an upscale auditorium atmosphere, it’s ideal for an intimate date night, a memorable outing with friends or family, or a relaxing solo escape.

The DFT appeals to a wide range of audiences by showcasing international films, documentaries, independent cinema, and festival favorites. For more than 20 years, it has also presented a complete lineup of Oscar®-nominated short films in all three categories—Animation, Live Action, and Documentary—giving audiences the chance to experience some of the year’s most celebrated films on the big screen.

As a home for serious moviegoers, the DFT has long attracted leading voices in film. In 1990, legendary critics Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel famously donned tuxedos and donated an evening to predict the Academy Award® winners during a standing-room-only benefit for the theatre.

For two decades, the DFT has also served as host and co-sponsor of the annual Michigan Student Film Festival. As the nation’s oldest student film festival, it celebrates emerging filmmakers and the creativity of the storytellers of tomorrow.

Beyond the screen, the DFT enhances the moviegoing experience through conversations with filmmakers and industry professionals. Over the years, the theatre has welcomed acclaimed guests including Spike Lee, Robert Duvall, James Earl Jones, and Michael Moore.

Whether you’re planning an enlightening afternoon or unforgettable evening out, explore the current schedule and join us at the DFT. Parking is available in the DIA lot on John R Street, as well as on surrounding streets. Tickets may be purchased at the door, by phone, or online.
