Join Judy Bowman to help create a collaborative collage in celebration of Black History Month.

Judy Bowman is a mixed-media collage artist born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. Her art practice centers on exalting America’s Black culture. Through vibrant hues, textured paper, and acrylic paint, Bowman illuminates narratives that move beyond institutional racism and the often-disparaging perspectives that limit the full picture of the Black experience.

Considering herself a visual griot, she sees her role as telling stories reflective of her coming-of-age on Detroit’s Eastside and in the historic Black Bottom neighborhood. Scenes in her dynamic collages depict love, community, and a deep sense of fellowship found in jazzy nights, the sway of young Black women and the swag of young Black men, Sunday church followed by family dinner, family outings, and the cultural dignity and richness that define Black life.
