About the Artwork
Berenice Abbott documented New York City during a period of rapid modernization, photographing the city from dramatic vantage points over a decade beginning in 1929. Abbott had worked in Paris in the 1920s for the American-born artist Man Ray; he introduced her to the photographs of Eugène Atget, who documented the vanishing architecture, shop windows, and street vendors of the changing French city. Abbott developed a signature style in the body of images she created of the American metropolis, which would become the publication Changing New York (1940).
