About the Artwork
The rooms of Roman houses of the first century were frequently covered with painted fresco decoration. In one style, continuous scenes covered the walls; in another, smaller scenes were framed against a solid background; and in the third style, delicate individual motifs, like this candelabrum, were used. The very tall, fanciful candleholder, ornamented with leaves, would have been an elegant echo in paint of a real bronze one that would have lighted the room.
