About the Artwork
In this two-panel composition, Kay WalkingStick explores different perceptions of the world. She utilizes beliefs from her Cherokee background and from her artistic exposure to American and European landscape training in her works. On the right, she depicts a cliff shining in the afternoon sunlight to symbolize the land perceived through the senses — in this case, sight. On the left, a symbol for the four cardinal directions represents the earth’s invisible, spiritual dimension. Side by side they illustrate two perceptions of the world.
